Dr Paz (Upasana) Tayal is an Academic Clinical Lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, based at the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the Royal Brompton Campus. She is also a sub-specialty cardiology trainee in inherited cardiac conditions and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) in the NW London Deanery.
She graduated from the University of Oxford with Merit and completed Academic Foundation training with Prof Stefan Neubauer and Prof Hugh Watkins before moving to London to continue clinical training. In 2014 she was awarded an MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship to do a PhD at Imperial College with Prof Sanjay Prasad, Prof Stuart Cook and Dr James Ware, evaluating the integrated genetic and phenotypic assessment of dilated cardiomyopathy. This work was awarded the National Heart Lung Institute Best Thesis Prize in 2018. Her work has been published in several high impact journals including JACC and Circulation. She has been awarded the American College of Cardiology Young Investigator award twice (2017 and 2021). In 2021 she was also shortlisted for the prestigious L'Oreal UNESCO Women in Science award.
She has continued in the department as a clinical lecturer, focusing on research into dilated cardiomyopathy. She undertook a visiting post doctoral fellowship at Stanford University in 2019 with Prof Euan Ashley's group, looking at digital health and machine learning. Her current focus is now looking at understanding sex specific differences in patients with cardiomyopathy, with the aim of improving outcomes for all patients affected by these conditions.
