A formulation of Rate-Controlled Constrained Equilibrium in terms of thermodynamically-derived variables (constraint potentials) for a constant pressure-enthalpy system was presented and employed in conjunction with a comprehensive mechanism for CH4 combustion comprising 63 species and 415 reactions, including N chemistry. The outcome was tested by means of homogeneous combustion and pair-wise-mixed stirred reactor calculations. Sets of few variables provided very accurate prediction of the major species, and moderately successful prediction of NO.

This paper describes some results on the flow field and wall shear stress in an annular gasturbine combustor obtained via Large-Eddy Simulation. This technique allows to obtain more information about the flow in the combustor than usually available with RANS modeling and deals easily with low frequency unsteadiness and other turbulence modeling issues not easily accounted for by RANS, but requires adequate modeling of the wall boundary conditions. The distribution of average and instantaneous wall shear stress is presented together with the instantaneous velocity and pressure fields. The main features of the flow, both close to the walls and in the core of the flow, are found to be highly unsteady. © 2003 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. Phase I construction of the Indiana University Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute (MPRI), including many reliability upgrades to the IUCF k220 cyclotron, construction of a variable energy proton Beam Delivery System (BDS), a horizontal beam Treatment Room with a Large Field Nozzle, and a Medical Clinic, is now complete. Commissioning of the BDS and the Large Field Nozzle is underway. Patient Treatment with this nozzle is scheduled to begin in late July 2003. This contribution discusses the unique features of the MPRI Cancer Treatment facility and the present Phase I commissioning results. In addition, two 360° rotating gantry systems were purchased from IBA in December 2002 for Phase II construction. The first gantry is scheduled for delivery in July 2003. The Phase II construction and installation schedule will also be briefly presented.

Studies have been carried out to determine the suitability of the IUCF Cooler Injector Synchrotron (CIS) as a potential replacement or supplement to the Indiana University Cyclotron as a source of proton beams for the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute (MPRI). The primary modification to the synchrotron would be the development of a slow extraction system. An achromatic beam line connecting CIS and the MPRI beam trunk line has been designed and could use magnets from the recently decommissioned Cooler ring at IUCF. In addition to providing redundancy, this project would increase the proton energy to 240 MeV and could provide higher resolution beams to the radiation effects target stations.

A 750 keV proton injector is being installed in place of a 600 kV Cockroft-Walton high voltage terminal at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility [1]. The injector features a microwave ion source, a 20 keV to 750 keV CW RFQ and a quadrupole triplet to focus the beam into the 15 MeV injector cyclotron. Two solenoids and one pulsed lens are used to match the 20 keV proton beam to the RFQ and to rapidly change the beam intensity. The injector has been tested offline; the results will be described in this paper.

Bondi S, Jones WP, 2002, A combustion model for premixed flames with varying stoichiometry
A model for premixed flames with no homogeneous methane-air mixture was presented. The thermochemical state of the mixture was defined by two variables: the reaction progress variable and the mixture fraction. The joint probability density function (pdf) of the reaction progress variable and the mixture fraction was modeled in terms of two statistically independent pdf. The time-averaged reaction arte was modeled in terms of the flame surface density for which transport equation was solved. The suitability of the flame surface approach to deal with premixed flames was confirmed. The two-variable model could predict the main features of premixed flames with varying stoichiometry.
