Dr Yara Evans is a Research Associate at the Centre for Environmental Policy, Imperial College London. She has a PhD in Human Geography (University of Wales Aberystwyth). Her research interests focus on social sustainability assessment of bio-economy projects in Europe (e.g. bioenergy and bio-based applications and products), the political ecology of natural resource extraction, use and management, conflict over resources in natural protected areas, and community participation in development initiatives in the Global South. Other themes she has examined over the years are the role of power in formulation of policy for natural resource use, the role of megaevents in urban regeneration and effects on local communities (e.g. 2012 London Olympics), the role of immigrant communities in Global Cities (e.g. London) with a focus on the the socio-economic dynamics of the Brazilian community in London, the emergence of London as a services-oriented Global City, and more recently, violence against immigrant women in London, with a case-study of Brazilian women
