Miss Yuanying Zhao is a second-year PhD student at Centre for Transport Studies (CTS), Imperial College London, supervised by Prof. John W. Polak and Dr. Jacek Pawlak. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Traffic Engineering from Tongji University (top university of transportation engineering in China) with First Class Degree. Her BEng final-year project involved investigating the geometric designing and signal optimisation of intersections of an area in Shanghai. With impressive performance in both the examination results and the dissertation, Yuanying obtained her Master’s Degree in Transport and Business Management from Imperial College London & University College London with Distinction. Her MSc thesis investigated the impact of multiple route guidance services on network performance, which motivated her enthusiasm in further research.
Before starting her PhD at Imperial College, Miss Zhao has already gained experience in modelling the demographics of travellers from simulated movement data by working as a research assistant at CTS. Her current research focuses on the semantic enrichment of transport big data through developing an inverse discrete choice modelling framework and the use of dataset fusion techniques. This approach is an important step towards improving the applicability of big datasets in various contexts including but not limited to travel behaviour analysis.
