Summary

Zexin Zheng joined the MSK Lab of Imperial College London and registered as a M.D.(Res) postgraduate in October 2018. His research interests focus on the intersection of biomechanics, 3D printing and hip & knee replacement, specifically, in the osteonecrosis of the femoral head and 3D printed customised patient-specific instruments. Zexin completed his 3 years master degree along with his residency training (equivalent to the CT3 ~ ST4 in the UK)at Fuzhou Second Hospital of Xiamen University, which was founded by British Royal Navy in 1866, and in the department of Bone Joint, more than 2000 cases of replacement surgeries annually gave him a marvelous boost . He took the OSCE and the paper test held by National Health Commission of China with distinction and therefore was granted the Resident Trainning Certificate. Consequently, Zexin obtained his master degree  of Clinical Medicine major in Surgery (Orthopaedics) at June 2018 from Xiamen University School of Medicine. Regarding his previous clinical training, he has become an experienced arthroplasty surgeon.Under the supervision of Pro.Cobb and Dr.Abel, he is now developing a software to measure the volume of the necrotic femoral head with the help of the engineers from Embody UK Ltd.This company is also designing patient-specific instruments for a novel hip implant called Ceramic H1 hip resurfacing system.This system enables the patients under 60 to recover to a high activity level when they suffer from osteonerosis, which is more commonly seen in Asian countries especially in China.

Prior to Imperial, Zexin's master thesis investigated the Learning Curve of the Direct Anterior Approach Total Hip Replacement in a surgeon’s first 50 cases. Besides, he also translated most chapters of the handbook The Master Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery: the Hip (Third Edition) which was authorised by Mayo Clinic into Chinese and published at November 2017. During his Master's in Fuzhou, he had proposed a project The development of a nano-silicon based and DNA self-assembly assistive fluorescent kit and its detection for osteosarcoma bio-markersand this was funded  by the Fuzhou Scientific Research Committee with 1,000, 000 RMB since December 2017. In addtion, Zexin helped organise the seasonal Advanced Nation-wide Hip and Knee Artificial Joints Courses held by the department of Bone Joint of Fuzhou Second Hospital, and during hip and knee replacements live broadcasts, by assisting in the theatre he gained surgical experiences  from world-wide experts,  such as Dr.Steven Hass from the Hospital for Special Surgery, etc. Plus, in such occasions, he bridged the language gap between Chinese chief surgeons and global experts . Before Zexin's enrolment at Imperial, he worked for the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University which ranked 7th in all Chinese Hospitals as an arthroplasty surgeon for a short period of time.
