Generation of subpicosecond pulses from a continuous-wave mode-locked Nd:YAG laser using a two-stage optical compression technique.
, Opt Lett, Vol: 10, Pages: 338-340, ISSN: 0146-9592By using a two-stage optical-fiber grating pair pulse-compression technique, 1.06-microm pulses as short as 0.7 psec have been obtained from an actively mode-locked cw Nd:YAG laser. This represents an overall pulse-compression ratio of 113.

Technique for measuring phase-conjugation fidelity by heterodyning signals.
, Opt Lett, Vol: 10, Pages: 40-42, ISSN: 0146-9592A simple heterodyning technique is described that permits a rigorous measurement of the phase-conjugate fraction of a scattered beam in Brillouin scattering. A general expression for interferometry using phase-conjugate mirrors is derived. The applications of the technique to the measurement of laser phase structure and intensity-dependent phase shifts, and also for high-resolution determination of Brillouin acoustic frequencies, are discussed.

Pulse compression in a phase-conjugating Brillouin cavity.
, Opt Lett, Vol: 9, Pages: 282-284, ISSN: 0146-9592By the formation of two Brillouin mirrors at either end of a methane chamber, a Brillouin cavity has been produced that is capable of oscillation when injected by a laser pulse. The pulse-compressing mechanisms of the Brillouin mirrors cause a train of intense short-duration pulses to be produced, and the Brillouin cavity displays the characteristic of a phase-conjugate resonator.

High-efficiency laser-pulse compression by stimulated Brillouin scattering.
, Opt Lett, Vol: 8, Pages: 313-315, ISSN: 0146-9592Highly efficient compression of laser pulses down to 1 nsec in duration by stimulated Brillouin scattering has been demonstrated. Compression ratios of ~10 and energy-conversion efficiencies >70% have been produced. Several compressor systems have been investigated, including the use of tapered waveguides, long-focal-length geometries, and generator-amplifier systems.
