Welcome to the Department of Physics at Imperial!

These pictures show the space-research Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn (1997 - 2017) (bottom) and key contributors to the mission (top). The mission involved a collaboration among NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Italian Space Agency (ASI). The Deparment of Physics at Imperial College London was a key collaborator thanks to our Head of Department - Professor Michele Dougherty - who covered a leading role on this 20-year-long space project. Who we are

Founded in 1906 as the Royal College of Science, the Department of Physics is located in the Blackett Laboratory and is one of the largest in the UK.

With world-class teaching and excellent academic and support staff, we offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses to ensure that our students graduate with the skills they need to reach senior positions in industry and academia.

Research & Impact

For over 110 years, our physicists have taken a leading role in the advancement of knowledge in the field and have influenced policies and everyday life practices with new technologies and applications.

Thanks to successful collaborations with HEIs and international agencies, people at Imperial Physics have given a significant contribution to our understanding of the Universe and the natural world.
