The Blackett Mural Competition invites current students from the Department of Physics to submit their designs! We're seeking a mural that vividly illustrates the rich history and achievements of our Department. The winning design will be prominently displayed on the stair landing of Level 4.

Call for submissions

We invite all current students at the Department of Physics to submit a design for a mural that encapsulates the heritage and accomplishments of our Department. The winning submission will inspire a mural that will be installed at the stair landing on Level 4 of the Blackett Building, gracing the newly refurbished space with a representation of our community.

Submission Guidelines

  • Create a text description that details your vision for the mural, explaining both its appearance and the inspiration behind your design. Supporting illustrations or drawings are welcome but optional.
  • Submit your design through the provided Microsoft Form. Acceptable formats for any visual aids include PNG, JPG, or PDF, and must not exceed a file size of 10MB.

Deadline for Submissions

All entries must be submitted by Sunday, 23 February, at 23:59, using this online form.

Selection Process

  • A panel comprised of both staff and students from the Department will review submissions and create a shortlist of the top five designs.
  • The department-wide vote by both staff and students will then choose the winner from this shortlist
  • The winning entry will then be passed onto a professional mural designer, and will then be displayed in the Blackett Building.

Selection Criteria

  • Relevance to Imperial Physics: The design must capture the Department of Physics' specific achievements, culture, and legacy at Imperial College London.
  • Originality and creativity: Submissions should be unique and innovative, offering a fresh perspective while aligning with the themes of the competition.
  • Clarity and attention to detail: Entries should include a clear and detailed text description, and a robust reasoning behind the elements included.
  • Feasibility: The practicality of translating the design into a mural, ensuring it fits within the physical space and constraints of the stair landing on Level 4.
