ICCET STUDENT WINS BRITISH GAS PRIZE
The 1994-95 British Gas Prize for the best MSc thesis has been awarded to Tim Young, an MSc Environmental Technology student.
Tim's project concerned the development of a sustainable transport strategy for Cornwall, and involved collaboration with the Council for the Protection of Rural England.
Cornwall is an area where this is of particular interest because of the need to balance the economic importance of the tourist industry and the environmental effects of the traffic it generates.
The project attempted to provide an assessment of the requirements and feasibility of reducing the environmental impact of transport on the county in the light of both national and local policy initiatives.
The thesis was nominated for the British Gas Prize because Tim managed to synthesise material from a wide variety of sources and provide a range of concrete proposals for future environmental and transport policy in the county. He will receive '100 prize.
Tim, who specialised in the pollution option, was awarded a distinction for his Environmental Technology MSc. He is currently working as an environmental consultant for ERM in Oxford.
