Sir Richard Sykes to be next Rector

The Imperial College Council has approved the appointment of Sir Richard Sykes, FRS, Executive Chairman of Glaxo Wellcome plc, as Rector of Imperial College in succession to Lord Oxburgh.

Lord Vincent, Chairman of the Court and Council, said: "In the unanimous view of the Search Committee, Sir Richard has, in full measure, the relevant qualities and the international stature and experience to fit him for the task of leading Imperial College."

"I feel deeply honoured to have been offered one of the most prestigious roles in UK academia.

"In this role I am keen to bring my industrial experience to bear in the academic environment. "It is expected that Sir Richard will take up the post early in 2001."
