Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) 2023 call

For further detail please contact Suzanne Husein

On 30 May 2022, UKRI published financial allocations for the next three years (April 2022 to March 2025).  This included a commitment to collective working in talent funding across £2b of talent initiatives (predominantly doctoral students and fellowships), with this funding being shown outside of Research Council core budgets.  EPSRC has now confirmed a new investment in Centres for Doctoral training (CDTs) for students to start in academic year 2024-2025.  EPSRC is developing the details of this initiative and are expected to announce further information later in October 2022.

EPSRC CDT call 2023

An institutional cap on outline submissions will be imposed by EPSRC.  The cap number is currently unknown.  [Note that in the 2018 CDT round, the Imperial cap was 24 outlines, noting that EPSRC’s budget for the 2023 CDT round is relatively lower than the 2018 round]

UKRI CDT call 2023

Institutions are invited to submit a maximum of two outline submissions as lead organisation.  There is no limit on the number of applications that organisations can partner on”.

College-led bids (to EPSRC and UKRI schemes)

In order to manage the cap on Imperial-led outlines, an internal selection process has been established.  Those interested in applying for an Imperial-led CDT are invited to submit an outline bid to researchoffice.fundingstrategy@imperial.ac.uk using the CDT 2023 Outline template College lead by noon Thursday 8 December 2022 for consideration by the Cross-College Research Proposals Review Group at its meeting on Monday 19 December 2022.   Ahead of any further information from EPSRC regarding the specific institutional cap, CCRPRG’s intention in December will be to create a longlist of 20 Imperial-led bids.   The expectation is that EPSRCs institutional cap for Imperial will be less than 20 outlines and therefore a second internal selection round is likely to be required, once the institutional cap is known.  Note that the outline template includes a summary of the institutional commitments that are expected or have been confirmed to support the proposed Centre.  Based on guidance and feedback from previous CDT calls, a minimum institutional commitment of 4 studentships is advised.  CDT PIs are expected to have engaged with the proposed host department (e.g. Head of Department) prior to developing an outline, to confirm departmental support of the bid and to discuss this institutional commitment. Statement of Commitment from the Department will be required with the outline submission, confirm their awareness and intention to provide studentships and any other commitments.

College-partner bids (to EPSRC and UKRI Schemes)

Although the cap on EPSRC and UKRI outline bids is expected to be applied to College-led bids only, we are also interested to hear about proposed Centres where College is a partner and therefore ask those leading the College’s participation in a bid lead elsewhere submit an outline bid to researchoffice.fundingstrategy@imperial.ac.uk using the CDT 2023 Outline template College partner by noon Thursday 8 December 2022 for consideration by the Cross-College Research Proposals Review Group at its meeting on Monday 19 December 2022, with additional expertise. CCRPRG will then offer feedback and guidance on these bids, as appropriate.
