Simulation of regional soil moisture deficits on a European scale
, Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift, Vol: 42, Pages: 149-151, ISSN: 0029-1951A simple deterministic simulation model for landscape-scale soil water deficits has been developed. Standard weather station data are used to estimate ‘daily’ precipitation and actual (regional) evapo- ranspiration (AET). The balance is added to soil moisture, which is accounted by a simple bucket nodel. AET is the daily integral of the lesser of supply and demand: Supply is governed by current oil moisture, demand by estimated net radiation and temperature. The model estimates geographical atterns of soil water deficit at a scale suitable for comparison with the distributions of plant species md vegetation types. The model provides a way of quantifying soil moisture stress in biogeographical esearch. © 1988 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Climatic changes of the last 18,000 years: Observations and model simulations
, Science, Vol: 241, Pages: 1043-1052, ISSN: 0036-8075Changes in solar radiation arising from changes in the orientation of the earth's axis had pronounced effects on tropical monsoons and mid-latitude climates as well as on ice-sheet configuration during the last 18,000 years. COHMAP (Cooperative Holocene Mapping Project) has assembled a global array of well-dated paleoclimatic data and used general-circulation models to identify and evaluate causes and mechanisms of climatic change. For the northern tropics, particularly in Africa and Asia, data and model results show that the orbitally induced increase in solar radiation in summer 12,000 to 6,000 years ago enhanced the thermal contrast between land and sea and thus produced strong summer monsoons, which raised lake levels in regions that are arid today. In middle to high latitudes the climatic response to both the insolation changes and to the retreating ice sheets led to readjustments in the vegetation in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Model results show that the large North American ice sheet split the westerly jet stream into northern and southern branches over North America. An increase in storms associated with the southern branch helps explain high lake levels and increased woodlands in the southwestern United States during full-glacial conditions. Comparisons of paleoclimatic data with the model simulations are important because models provide a theoretical framework for evaluating mechanisms of climatic change, and such comparisons help to evaluate the potential of general circulation models for predicting future climates.

Pollen percentages, tree abundances and the Fagerlind effect
, Journal of Quaternary Science, Vol: 1, Pages: 35-43, ISSN: 0267-8179Pollen diagrams traditionally are read as if pollen percentages were linearly related to relative tree abundances, although the slopes and intercepts of these relationships are accepted to differ among taxa. Corresponding map patterns of modern pollen and tree percentages support this assumption of linearity, which also underlies the use of linear regression on percentage data for pollen‐tree calibration. Fagerlind, however, showed that the theoretical relationship need not be linear and may be confounded by interdependencies among taxa. Regressions and scatter plots of modern pollen and tree percentages are here compared with results of extended R‐value (ERV) models, which correct for the ‘Fagerlind effect’. Three data sets from Wisconsin and Michigan, USA illustrate that regression coefficients provide a first approximation to their ERV equivalents, but scatter plots derived from the ERV analyses show reduced scatter about linearised relationships.
