Important Notice:

Cancellation of booking after the advertised closing date, or non-attendance at the final examination, will result in an invoice for the full internal course fee of £350, being payable to the College.

All participants are required to attend on all advertised course dates and sit both the written and practical examinations.

Who should attend

This Institute of Safety in Technology and Research (ISTR) accredited course is intended for Departmental Safety Officers, Laboratory Managers and Technical staff with a significant role working within Containment Level 3 and 2 facilities at Imperial College, London. It is a structured and comprehensive training course that meets competency requirements and is supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Essential Information:

The online e-learning course runs for six weeks. This is six weeks from the date the delegate receives the login details. The start date (when the login details are sent) can be arranged for a date suitable to the delegate - there are no fixed start dates. Further information will be sent to delegates once a booking has been received. the POD will ask that delegates complete a Learning Agreement and arrange for a PO number to be raised.

The whole course has six modules. The full course is released on day one (the day the login details are sent) to allow delegates flexibility in their learning. Delegates may complete the six modules at any time within the six weeks – there is no requirement for certain modules to be completed on certain weeks.

Details about content of the modules/assessments.

All assessments must be passed with a score of 50%+. The overall mark (across the whole course) must be 60%+. Should delegates fail to meet that mark in one or more assessments, they will be given the opportunity to spend some extra time in the course for revision and the chance to have a face-to-face chat with one or more tutors regarding any course material (via MS Teams/Zoom etc.), and the opportunity to re-sit the assessment(s).

Key areas covered in this course

Biosafety Practitioner Level 1 is based on completion of all modules and assessments. The online e-learning course comprises six modules covering the following areas; The Law, Risk Assessment and Hazards of Biological Materials, Health and Safety Management, Laboratory Design, Equipment and Disinfection. Transport of Biological Material, Genetic Modification and Waste and Learning and Development including short presentation.

Registration as a Biosafety Practitioner

ISTR has accredited course providers, and once attendees have completed all units and passed the assessment, they can become registered by ISTR as Level 1 Practitioners if they have two years of relevant experience.
