Tutor's Tip

“Your tutees can give you some clear insights into how the student community perceives the course. You do not need to run questionnaires, you can just have a chat about what they think they are learning or should be learning and just listen to their opinion.” (Personal Tutor, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering)

In order to develop their skills and techniques, many personal tutors seek evaluative feedback from tutees on the effectiveness of their personal tutoring approaches, and students appreciate this openness. As an alternative to asking directly, you might ask your tutees to write down their responses to the following questions:

What is helpful about the way I currently support you as a personal tutor?

In what ways might I improve the way I support you as a personal tutor?

There is likely to be a variety responses, as students have different preferences in how they want to be supported.
