The decommission of iMedia is now complete. If you require any original videos or audio files please see Retrieving files from iMedia.

What we are doing

We will be decommissioning the iMedia digital asset management system in stages between July 2019 and May 2020. This decommission started when we turned off the ability to upload new videos to iMedia.

iMedia won’t be replaced with another proprietary software package because the College has plenty of alternative video and audio hosting options. The Digital team currently recommends the following alternative video and audio publishing options; YouTube, MS Stream, Panopto and SoundCloud.

We will be creating a redirecting application so the current embeds still work and during the course of the project we will decide what to do with the iTunesU content.

For more information on using these tools please contact your Faculty Web Officer.

What is iMedia

The iMedia system was built around 10 years ago (2008) by developers in the Digital team. It is made up of several components working together to view, stream, store and encode video and audio files in various formats and resolutions. It also provides podcast feeds to iTunes and iTunesU.

iMedia has served the College well over the last decade but the software infrastructure it exists on is old and unsupported, while newer software solutions have emerged.

Why we are doing it

  • The software infrastructure is old and unsupported
  • It isn’t widely used in the College
  • There are more commonly used alternatives available at the College
