What we are doing

 We will be purchasing software that will allow visitors to our websites to opt into cookies on their machines, we will also carry out an audit of all current cookies.

The chosen software solution will be flexible enough to be used across all centrally supported sites and should be able to be used on non-centrally supported websites.

The Digital Team will work with editors of centrally supported sites to propagate the solution.

For more information on using these tools please contact your Faculty Web Officer.

Why we are doing it

Imperial College websites are currently not in compliance with the  General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)  and  Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).  The guidance states very clearly that we need to put in place functionality across all  of  our websites to allow visitors to be able to opt in and control non-essential tracking methods like cookies.

The basic rule of regulation 6 in PECR is that we must:

  • tell people the cookies are there;
  • explain what the cookies are doing and why; and
  • get the person’s consent to store a cookie on their device.
