The Imperial Mobile native application is available in iOS (Apple) and Android versions.

This app enables students and staff to access College information and services on their mobile device.

The application is supplied by a third party – CampusM and the accessibility of the technical infrastructure and user interface is the responsibility of the third-party supplier.

The accessibility of the content on the app is the responsibility of Imperial College London content editors and this is further explained in this statement.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this app. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • Use different screen sizes – Imperial Mobile has a responsive design
  • Get alt text for images
  • Correct content sequencing
  • Consistent navigation
  • Appropriate labels
  • Zoom within device settings
  • Resize text
  • No content that relies solely on sensory characteristics of components such as shape, size, visual location, orientation, or sound.
  • Descriptive links
  • Heading hierarchies for content pages
  • Video captions, transcriptions and audio descriptions in content pages
  • Use any content types or features that have been optimised such as accordions, slideshow/carousels, tables and tabs.

How accessible the Imperial Mobile native apps are

Both apps have been found compliant, with minor exceptions, with the WCAG 2.1A and AA Guidelines.

There are no restrictions for:

  • Deaf users
  • Limited hearing users.
  • Non-verbal users
  • Limited manipulation users
  • Limited reach and strength users
  • Cognitive user group

There are some restrictions for:

  • Users without vision
  • Users with limited vision
  • Users without perception of colour

What we do about known issues

We work to achieve and maintain Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standards, but it is not always possible for all our content to be accessible. Where content is not accessible, we will state a reason, warn users and offer alternatives.

Imperial College London is committed to making the Imperial Mobile apps content accessible in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

We are working with CampusM to influence their digital accessibility roadmap, and they intend to work on the apps user interface and framework to ensure compliance by September 2021.

CampusM continue to make iterative improvements to the native apps.

This native iOS app is compliant, with minor exceptions, with WCAG 2.1A and AA Guidelines, due to the known issues listed below.

Non accessible content

Content in the app can be created by a small number of editors who have been trained in accessibility standards

It is possible to break accessibility within the content pages as the accessible aspects of the content editor are not automatically enforced for example:

  • Descriptive links
  • Headings
  • Image alt text

Non compliance with the accessibility regulations

CampusM conducted a review of their native apps in October 2019 and these are the areas that do not comply with WCAG 2.1 AA standards:

  • Illogical heading structure is present in the library integration
  • Pages are present that contain moving content
  • No pause button for moving content
  • Links when live tile is configured for library integration were found to lack a description that provided enough content to screen reader use
  • Colour contrast combinations are present that pass minimum requirements, there are however some present that do not pass the 4.5:1 minimum ratio
  • Links were found to lack a description that provided enough content to screen reader users.
