This workshop provides an insight into preparing your thesis to be made Open Access (OA) and the benefits of open access more generally. This workshop will provide you with a general introduction to the topic, with specific reference to your PhD thesis, and related research outputs that may arise from PhD study. You will be introduced to: 

  • Open Access repositories
  • Practice of Open Research
  • Open access publishing
  • Online tools to find open access research material

The course will cover UKRI’s new open access policy which requires funded authors to make journal/conference proceedings submitted for publication from 1 April 2022 immediately open access without any embargo and using an open licence.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this workshop, you will be better able to:

  • Utilise the College’s repository and OA funding systems to make your research papers open access
  • Utilise Open Access tools and websites to find OA material and suitable locations to publish OA
  • Use preprint servers for communicating research at an early stage
  • Identify potential illegitimate publishing entities which risk your research reputation
