Course overview

Build background skills in biomedical research before specialising in anaesthetics, pain medicine and intensive care.

On this stream of the MRes in Biomedical Research, you'll explore the hands-on manipulation of physiology and real-time pharmacological interventions used to safely manage patients in all parts of a hospital.

You'll study the fundamental principles of molecular mechanisms and advance your learning through lectures, seminars, tutorials and technical workshops.

Two five-month research projects will help develop key skills in communication, project design, and producing written and oral reports.

Choose your stream

You have the option of choosing our general biomedical research stream, or one of seven specialisms. All of our biomedical research streams have the same course structure and each stream has its own tailored set of projects alongside a core programme of lectures, seminars and practical classes.

You should consider which stream is right for you according to your career aims and background. If an offer of admission is made, it will correspond to a specific stream. Switching streams is not possible once you have commenced your studies.

Is this stream for you?

This stream is suitable for science graduates with an interest in biomedical research and medicine. You should be interested in furthering your understanding of pain medicine and intensive care.

This stream is aimed at:

  • trainee doctors in anaesthesia, pain medicine and intensive care, who are interested in pursuing further education and research;
  • junior trainee doctors interested in studying perioperative medicine; and
  • science degree graduates with a biomedical background.

This stream is delivered by the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction in collaboration with the Department of Surgery and Cancer.
