Eligibility criteria

To apply for a British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM, you must:
  • Be a passport holder and permanent resident of Egypt.
  • Be available to commence your studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2023.
  • Have submitted an application to study at Imperial College London before your scholarship application can be considered and have received an offer to study for one of the eligible programmes by the time selection takes place.
  • Have completed your undergraduate degree or have all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at Imperial College London and meet the academic entry requirement for admissions before the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2023.
  • Have not previously studied at degree level or higher in the UK or lived recently in the UK.
  • Meet the English language requirement for your programme at Imperial College London. Applicants who are awarded this scholarship will be required to have met College English entry requirements (Pre-sessional English courses are not supported by this programme) by 30 June 2023.
  • Demonstrate a case for financial need.
  • Return to the country of your citizenship for a minimum of two years after your course/scholarship has finished.
  • Demonstrate active in the field with work experience or with a proven interest in the programme area you are applying for.
  • Demonstrate that you are willing to contribute in the future to capacity-building and socio-economic advancement through the benefits achieved after graduating from Imperial College London and returning your home country.
  • Demonstrate in your application a plan and passion to engage other women and girls in STEM from your home country.
  • Agree to maintain contact with the British Council and act as an ambassador for the UK and engage with activities as part of a British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM alumnus during and after your study in the UK. Any involvement in these activities during your study in the UK will take up no more than five hours per term.
Additional Eligibility Criteria

If any of the following points are applicable to you, you are not eligible for a British Council Scholarship for Women in STEM:

  • You hold dual British Citizenship.
  • Are an employee, a former employee, or relative of an employee of Her Majesty’s Government (including British embassies/high commissions; the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy; Department of International Trade; the Ministry of Defence; and the Home Office).
  • Are an employee, or former employee, or relative of an employee of the British Council Scholarship for Women in STEM – eligible countries.
  • Are currently in receipt of financial support or funding towards your studies in the UK from any other source.
  • Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship or a UK institutional scholarship/financial bursary.

Please note: This scholarship is not available to continuing students.

You can apply online by clicking here.  The deadline to apply for the scholarship is 11.59 (GMT) on Friday, 21 April 2023 (deadline extended from Thursday, 9 March 2023).

Please note, that you must have applied to Imperial College London before applying for the British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM and that you must be holding an offer from Admissions by the time selection takes place to be considered for a Scholarship. It is expected that selection will take place shortly after the scholarship deadline of 21 April.

Application fee: If you’re applying for a postgraduate course at Imperial, you may need to pay an application fee. For information on application fees and to check if you're eligible for an application fee waiver, please go here.

Additional information

Value of awards

Each scholarship covers full tuition fees, an annual stipend of up to £18,192, and a return economy-class flight from home country to UK. It also covers other related costs including an accepted English language proficiency test exam fee* (*only if an English language test is required as part of the offer of admissions), visa application and NHS surcharge.

Additional funding is available if scholars have caring responsibilities.

Award holders will be refunded the cost of an English language proficiency test exam fee if eligible, visa application and NHS surcharge on receipt of receipts and accompanying documentation once they enrol on the course and provide their UK bank details.  

The Student Financial Support Office team at Imperial College London will arrange the booking of flights to the UK for award holders. Award holders will be provided of the process to book the flight once awards have been allocated.   

Outcome of awards

The successful candidates will be notified by email no later than 28 July 2023.  If you have not heard from us by this date, please assume you have been unsuccessful in your application.
