Imperial College London, Europe’s leading science and technology university, is pleased to announce the availability of a high-value and prestigious engineering scholarship for Bulgarian undergraduate students worth £80,000 (215,000 BGN Lev) over four years.

Value of the award

The Kolio Ficheto Bulgarian Engineering Scholarship will pay full tuition fees and an annual maintenance grant of £11,000 for the cost of living for one undergraduate student throughout their three or four year course - subject to satisfactory progression.

Eligibility

This scholarship is only available to students who:

  • are studying in a state school in Bulgaria
  • are of Bulgarian nationality
  • achieve an overall score in the Diploma za Zavurcheno Sredno Obrazovanie (DZSO) of 5.9 or above, and:
    • a 6.0 in Mathematics, physics and one other relevant science subject
    • pass their Matriculation (State) Exam in both (compulsory) Bulgarian and in either mathematics or another relevant science subject (for Computing and Mechanical Engineering, physics would be preferred; for Chemical Engineering, either physics or chemistry would be preferred) – applicants who pass in a third relevant subject will be preferred
    • meet Imperial’s minimum English language requirements, including the relevant test(s) – see: www.imperial.ac.uk/registry/admissions/ugenglish
    • can demonstrate a household income of £25,000 (approx. 67,000 BGN Lev) per year or less (parental payslips will be required)
    • hold an offer from Imperial for a three or four year undergraduate course within one of the four participating departments to study Computing, Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering (please see below). PLEASE NOTE: Year abroad courses are excluded.

This scholarship is intended to help students from less advantaged backgrounds within Bulgaria. It is therefore only open to students who study at state-run schools, and who are from a low-income background.

Proof will be required for each of the above criteria.

About the four participating departments

  • The Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the largest and leading departments of its kind in the world, with top-rated teaching and world-leading research. Undergraduates are able to train on the most advanced pilot plant equipment in the world.
  • The Department of Computing is top-rated for research and has some of the best lab and high performance computing facilities in the UK. Our computing degrees produce some of the most sought-after graduates of any computing-related degree in the country, with students going on to work in research as well as for companies such as Google, Facebook and Microsoft.
  • The Department of Mechanical Engineering has a consistent record of excellent teaching and research; with extensive facilities which mirror those used in industry and ensure that our students have the opportunity to develop the skills required by a graduate engineer in the twenty-first century. The top rated department of its kind in the UK.
  • The Dyson School of Design Engineering focuses on the fusion of design thinking, engineering thinking and practice, within an enterprise and entrepreneurial culture. Calling upon creative and innovative engineers who will be the next generation of design engineers. 

Please note: these four Departments will also consider Bulgarian applicants, who meet the necessary grade requirements, for places not supported by the scholarship.

How to apply

Applicants wishing to apply for this scholarship must first apply for a place to study at Imperial College London. There is no separate application form that you need to complete in order to apply for this scholarship

Applicants are requested to email Scholarships@imperial.ac.uk to inform us of your intention to be considered for this scholarship and include a pdf copy of parental payslips. Your prospective department will use your admission application and references to assess your academic merit and potential.

Outcome of the award

The successful candidate will be notified by email no later than 31 July 2016.  If you have not heard from us by this date please assume you have been unsuccessful in your application.

Please note that the successful scholar may be expected to meet informally with the donors on occasions, and will be required to submit a short statement of progress each year that will be shared with the donors.

This award is for students starting in the academic year 2016-17 and cannot be deferred.
