As we move into the coming decade our need to balance economic growth and the development and upgrade of our infrastructure, with rapidly changing social and environmental concerns become ever more acute.  Research into viable routes to reduce pollution, minimise impact on the environment and maintain quality of life explores the question: how can we improve quality of life through infrastructure in a sustainable and fair way, while minimising the impacts on environments.

7th July, 11.30 – 11:50 Carbon Neutral to Net Zero Pollution Panel, 12:10 – 12:30 Breakout.

Panel: Professor Mike Cook (Chair, Buro Happold)

MikeDr Mike Cook is a leading structural engineer who has made a significant contribution to the design of many innovative buildings, to the development of a thriving Buro Happold practice and to the reputation of the profession.

In 2011-2017 Mike was elected to become Chairman of Buro Happold with guiding responsibility for long-term vision and achievement of this globally respected practice of engineers. Buro Happold is now an international firm of consulting engineers working in the built environment with some 20 office world-wide.

Since 2007, Michael has been Adjunct Professor of Creative Design at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College. He is a member of the Vice Chancellor’s Advisory Committee at Coventry University and an external examiner at the Architectural Association, London. He is a past Trustee of the Happold Foundation, a charity registered for the promotion of education, research and training in fields applicable to design of the built environment.

In 2019 Mike was instrumental in galvanising a wide and influential network in the UK of engineering institutions and companies to initiate and lead their Declarations of Climate Emergency.

In 2020 Mike was named the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) Gold Medallist. The award recognises his infectious enthusiasm and curiosity for structural engineering and his passion and leadership in responding to the challenges of climate change.

Dr Ana Mijic, Senior Lecturer in Water Management

Ana

Dr Ana Mijic is a Senior Lecturer in Water Management at Imperial College London. She is leading the development of novel systems analysis focused on quantifying the interaction between the water cycle and sustainable development. The work has aim to inform regulatory bodies and water industry if and how we can support economic growth whilst ensuring sustainable water use and flood and water quality management under future uncertainties. Through NERC Innovation Fellowship funding she worked with the UK Environment Agency to apply systems thinking and systemic approaches to understanding the catchment water system complexity of the Cumbria Catchment Pioneer.

She has led the UK NERC CHANSE project on systems water management and irrigation water use in India. Currently, Ana is a Systems Analysis Lead for the UK NERC CAMELLIA impact programme, where her work is focused on the development of systems water management models that can represent the integrated water infrastructure planning system, and how grey and green infrastructure solutions and housing design can be integrated to contribute to the overall quality of life in cities.

 Dr Marc Stettler

Marc

Dr Marc Stettler is Senior Lecturer in Transport and the Environment in the Centre for Transport Studies at Imperial College London where he leads the Transport & Environment Laboratory (@TransEnvLab_IC). He joined Imperial as a Lecturer in 2015.

Marc completed his PhD on the impacts of aviation emissions at the University of Cambridge in 2013. He has an MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development from Cambridge, and a BSc in Natural Sciences from the University of Durham.

Marc's research focuses on evaluating and reducing the effect of transport activity on climate change and air pollution, with particular attention to understanding sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and pollutant emissions, especially nanoparticles. He leads a broad portfolio of research projects undertaken by his group spanning across transport modes from road to aviation.
