Centre for Systems Engineering and Innovation Showcase event 2022
On 20 September 2022 the Centre for Systems Engineering and Innovation will host the yearly flagship Showcase event. The event celebrates the Centre’s research achievements during the previous year as well as our engagement with industry and policy. The event is also an occasion to hear from thought leaders in the fields relevant to Systems Engineering and Infrastructure and our research agenda. This year, we will focus on ‘Collaborative working’, and specifically on how academia, industry and policy can work together to enable outcome-based decision-making that drives more comprehensive social, environmental and economic value.

Professor Washington Ochieng
Professor Washington Yotto Ochieng, FREng, is the Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Chair in Positioning and Navigation Systems. He is also the Senior Security Science Fellow at the Institute for Security Science and Technology (ISST) at Imperial College London. Formerly, he was the Head of the Centre for Transport Studies and Co-Director of the ISST at Imperial. He is the current Vice President of the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN).
With a background in industry and academia, Ochieng worked at Racal Electronics Limited as a Principal Engineer where he participated in various international industrial consortia developing satellite navigation systems and products. He moved to Imperial in October 1997. Ochieng is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng). He is also a Fellow of the UK Institutions of Civil Engineers, Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation, RIN and Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.
Dr Ana Mijic
Dr Ana Mijic is a Reader in Water Systems Integration and Director of the Centre for Systems Engineering and Innovation (CSEI). She is leading the development of novel systems tools focused on quantifying the interaction between water systems and sustainable development. Through NERC Innovation Fellowship funding, she worked with the UK Environment Agency to apply systems thinking and systemic approaches to developing principles of systems water management at a catchment scale. She has led the CHANSE project on systems water management and irrigation water use in India.
Currently, Ana is leading VENTURA, an EPSRC-funded project to co-create a state-of-the-art web-based, end-user led digital service prototype in a form of a Virtual Decision Room (VDR).
Ana is also a Systems Analysis Lead for the CAMELLIA impact programme, where her work is focused on the development of systems water management models that can represent the integrated water infrastructure planning system, and how grey and Blue-Green infrastructure solutions can be integrated with land use planning and housing design. Models can used to inform design and operations of water infrastructure systems and test environmental regulation under climate change uncertainty in the context of NZI. Ana is also a member of the EWRE Hydrology group that was awarded the 2019 Imperial President’s Award for Excellence in Research for Outstanding Research Team.
In April 2022 Ana was awarded the prestigious Satish Dhawan Visiting Chair Professorship to spend time at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore to teach and work with academics within the Institute on systems approaches to water management in India.
Fergus Harradence leads for the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy on sponsorship of the infrastructure, construction and rail sectors, as well as public procurement policy. Since joining the Civil Service in 2000, he has worked in a number of Departments in a range of economic policy roles, including trade policy, export promotion, innovation and corporate tax. His current responsibilities Include BEIS' policies to help improve the productivity, sustainability and performance of the construction sector, including through encouraging the adoption of digital and offsite manufacturing technologies, the Department's contribution to the Government's house building ambitions, increasing the skills and competency of the construction workforce, and decarbonising the sector. He also manages the BEIS relationship with the Construction Leadership Council, and through that, links with the wider industry.
Paul is passionate about helping clients deliver successful outcomes, bringing systems thinking, industry experienced, growth mindset, and tenacity together to translate vision and mission into more specific plans and activities. He has held several posts across a number of global organisations operating in technology, energy, water and transport markets. He has a track record of successfully developing and implementing business strategies in complex fast-moving environments, leading a portfolio of projects ranging from, technical services, business transformation, new product and process development to supplier and client relationship management.
Dr Graham Bleakley
Graham Bleakley Ph.D. recently took on the role of Systems Engineering Technical Director at Costain to help them develop their systems engineering capability as part of their Digital Engineering team. Since joining Costain he has been involved helping major Rail and Infrastructure projects to develop digital ways of working based on Systems Engineering processes.
Graham has 30 years’ experience working in Systems Engineering, in particular Model Based Systems Engineering, within the A&D, Automotive and Transport sectors. He has helped numerous companies (whilst in consulting and development roles at IBM, Telelogic and I-Logix) implement model-based systems engineering processes and tool chains within their organization. He was also a co-chair and lead architect of the OMGs Unified Architecture Framework group, which unifies DoDAF, MODAF and NAF into a single metamodel and commercially available framework for enterprise architecture and systems of systems development.
Graham holds a B.Eng. Hons. in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D in Model Based Systems Engineering for Safety Critical Applications from City University, London, UK.
At Balfour Beatty, I lead a portfolio of strategic transformation projects centred around Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) in the Major Projects and Highways business. My drive is not only to ensure we understand the benefits MMC can bring to our projects, but that we have the capability, experience and tools required to succeed.
I am a Chartered Civil Engineer with a background delivering infrastructure projects in central London - from protecting London from flooding by maintaining the flood defence infrastructure to delivering on the legacy of the London 2012 Olympics by providing new bridges and road infrastructure to Stratford & Hackney Wick.
I am also the Co-Founder of SheBuilds Collective, an engineering collective showcasing the great achievements of women in our industry and doing our bit to ensure we are creating an inclusive and empowering environment for anybody who wants to play a part in it.
Jeremiah is a Chartered Civil Engineer with a mix of frontline knowledge in multiple large-scale civil engineering projects in Hong Kong and experience in innovation and digital transformation with major engineering contractors. With an interest in drawing value and insight from data generated from various aspects of construction, he currently works as the Digital Engineering Lead in the Modern Methods of Construction team in Balfour Beatty.
Dr Luigi Mosca
Dr Mosca Luigi is a postdoctoral research associate at Imperial College London, at the “Center for Systems Engineering and Innovation". Prior to joining Imperial, he completed his PhD in Management at the University of Padova (Italy) and was a research fellow at Bayes Business School. His research interests lie at the intersection of organisation theory, entrepreneurship, and strategic management. In particular, his research focuses on different forms of online and offline organizing, novel organizational design forms as well as sustainable business model innovation.
Pepe is a Research Assistant at the CSEI (Centre for Systems Engineering and Innovation) in collaboration with the Alan Turing Institute. He is developing the conceptualisation of a new data-driven framework to improve the decision-making process for urban planners and other relevant stakeholders. Pepe is also writing his PhD thesis at the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department within the Environmental and Water Resource Engineering (EWRE) section. His PhD titled "Infrastructure Ecology Framework for Sustainable Urban Planning and Water Management" is part of the Community Water Management for a Liveable London (CAMELLIA) research programme. Pepe is a registered architect inside the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and has more than 12 years of experience in the architectural and engineering design industries.
Dr Brendan Bromwich
Dr Brendan Bromwich is a Principal Civil Engineer at Mott MacDonald. Brendan has a strong record in interdisciplinary systems analysis. He combines practical experience in leading collaborative work on system transformation – such has work on the post conflict reconstruction in Sudan or developing the OxCam Arc Integrated Water Management Framework; and analytical work such as editing the Oxford Handbook of Food Water and Society or leading the Systems Analysis for Water Resources study for Defra. He has theoretical understanding of engineering and social sciences with publications and degrees in both fields.
Andrew recently joined Aczel as a Partner. Aczel is a consultancy specialising in strategic change management and complex project delivery across multiple sectors
From June 2016 Andrew served as Chief Operating Officer of the Systra Group, a French headquartered company with 7000 staff, globally, specialising in transport engineering and consultancy services. Andrew was previously Director of Engineering and Construction for Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Plc.
Andrew has over 35 years’ experience of delivering major infrastructure in the UK and overseas. As both a project manager and an executive officer he has been responsible for the delivery of many of the country’s major infrastructure projects over that time
Prior to his appointment at Tidal Lagoon, Andrew was the Chief Executive Officer of Balfour Beatty plc. He held a range of executive positions in his 17 years at Balfour Beatty, including Chief Operating Officer and latterly Chief Executive Officer. From graduation he initially spent 12 years with the Kier Group, a period that included his involvement in the construction of Sizewell B nuclear power station
Andrew is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He has served as a Vice President of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and was previously named Civil Engineering Manager of the Year by the Institution. In 2020, Andrew led a study on behalf of the ICE into the performance of infrastructure project delivery that led to a report. In July 2021, Andrew was appointed as a Non-Executive Director of the newly formed Board of AWE Plc, with specific responsibility for the infrastructure investment programme to support the current and future delivery requirements of the organisation.
In December, Andrew was appointed as a Non-Executive Director of Sheffield Forgemasters Ltd, with specific responsibilities for the investments in new infrastructure and equipment by MoD to support future at sea capability.
