AB - Contact units formed by wet clutch friction materials have been studied over a range of pressures and during rubbing. The real contact area increases approximately linearly with applied load, and at nominal pressures of above 2 MPa, the contact units may be deforming elastically and plastically to give larger units. During sliding the real area of contact increases dramatically due to a truncating wear mechanism on the contact units. These findings are supported by AFM images of individual fibres before and after the rubbing test.
