Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Centre (MRC)

The Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Centre brings the worlds of medicine and robotics together, focusing on technological innovation with a string emphasis on clinical translation and direct patient benefits. The Centre serves as a synergistic platform for clinicians, engineers, and researchers from local and overseas universities, including ETH Zurich, Imperial College London, and Johns Hopkins University, to work together and forge new ways to translate biomedical engineering research innovations into medical practices.

ROBOGAST - Transformative Healthcare Technologies

This research project aims to transform early diagnosis and treatment of gut cancers using flexible endoscopy. The programme brings together leading experts in soft robotics, medical imaging, sensing and control, functionalised materials, tribology, engineering and surgery. This expertise will help us design a device which will have a major healthcare impact and benefit the largest possible number of patients.

MedTechONE - research & translation of medical technologies

Well established and successful structures exist to support entrepreneurs across the Imperial College ecosystem, from early-stage experimental medicine, scientific innovation and engineering advances, to start-up formation. However, innovation in the MedTech space has remained notoriously difficult, with additional complexities and barriers to market entry such as regulatory hurdles, high development costs before a technology can attract investment, and challenges with NHS adoption. MedTechONE is a College-wide Centre of Excellence, building on those programmes, and based at Imperial White City campus, with delivery sites across College campuses.

Future AI and Robotics Hub for Space (FAIR-SPACE)

The FAIR-SPACE Hub is a UK national centre of research excellence in space robotics and AI. The Hub was launched in November 2017, as part of the government’s £84m R&D funding on “robotics and AI for extreme environments” through the Industry Strategic Challenge Fund (ISCF). In its initial 3-year programme, the Hub has secured a £7.95m research grant from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the UK Space Agency (UKSA), boosted by a further £7.5m match fund from the industrial sector and a £15m business development fund.

Micro-Robotics for Surgery

The programme grant 'Micro-Robotics for Surgery' seeks to harness different strands of engineering and clinical developments in micro-robotics for precision surgery to establish platform technologies in: 1) multi-scale robotic design and fabrication; 2) micro-manipulation and cooperative control; 3) microscopic imaging and spectroscopic biosensing; 4) intra-operative vision and navigation; and endoluminal platform development.

Wellcome Trust Institutional Translational Partnership Award

The Hamlyn Centre at Imperial College holds an Institutional Translational Partnership Award (iTPA) from the Wellcome Trust allowing it to implement a framework inspired by Medtech Industry R&D processes for rapid acceleration of medical device development, with fast deployment into clinical settings. This Accelerator leverages the academic research excellence, strong clinical links and the translational environment at Imperial College.
