We have two dedicated solid state Bruker NMR machines, one running at 600 MHz and the other at 200 MHz. We also have access to the newly expanded Imperial College London Cross-faculty NMR Centre for solution state work.

NMR solid state machines

Bruker 600 MHz NMR

We have a 600MHz Bruker standard bore superconducting magnet operating at a field strength of 14.1T, dedicated to solid state applications. This machine is used to study mobile anisotropic systems, such as model membranes and lyotropic liquid crystals.

We have a variety of probes allowing us to study a wide range of nuclei. Sample are studied either as "powder" dispersions of aligned systems, or using Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) techniques.

We can heat to around 150°C and perform low temperature work, either using an electric chiller unit or by passing nitrogen gas through a liquid nitrogen dewer.

2.5mm MAS Double Resonance Probe

  • 2.5mm rotors allow spinning speeds < 35kHz (typically 3-15kHz)
  • Allows very high resolution 1H spectra
  • Also used for 13C MAS and 31P MAS
  • Can use 1H decoupling for NOE, CP ..etc..
  • Small sample quantities required (5mg)
  • Temperature range: -50 to 150°C

4mm MAS Double Resonance Probe

  • 4mm rotors allow spinning speeds < 15kHz (typically 3-5kHz)
  • Ideal for 13C MAS, 31P (MAS and static) and 1H MAS
  • Good signal to noise with full rotor
  • Moderate sample quantities (100mg)
  • May employ 1H decoupling, NOE, CP ..etc..
  • Temperature range: -50 to 150°C

7mm MAS Low Frequency Single Resonance Probe

  • 7mm rotors allow spinning speeds < 7kHz (typically 3-5kHz)
  • Low frequency probe
  • Ideal for 14N (MAS and static)
  • Excellent signal to noise with full rotor
  • Large sample quantities (300mg)
  • Temperature range: -50 to 150°C

5mm Wideline Probe

  • Large frequency range
  • Ideal for quadrupole work 2H, 14N
  • Good signal to noise with full sample tube
  • Large sample quantities (150mg)
  • Temperature range: -50 to 150°C

We also have a standard Bruker BBO solution state probe.

Bruker 200 MHz NMR

We have a 200MHz Bruker wide bore superconducting magnet operating at a field strength of 4.7T, dedicated to solid state applications.

We have a variety of probes to study a wide range of nuclei. Samples are studied either as "powder" dispersions of aligned systems, or via Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) techniques.

Samples can be heated to around 300°C and we can perform low temperature work, by passing nitrogen gas through a liquid nitrogen dewer.
