Biofluids and Transport

The Xu Group

Welcome to the Biofluids and Transport Group!

We are an interdisciplinary research group led by Professor Xiao Yun Xu, based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. The primary focus of our research is the analysis of complex transport processes in biological and physiological systems. We develop and validate computational models to study cardiovascular flows, thrombosis, and drug delivery, with applications in risk stratification, treatment planning, and the evaluation of medical devices and therapies in cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Our active research topics include:

  1. Computational modelling of cardiovascular flow and tissue mechanics, integrated with 4D flow MRI, applied to medical device performance and endovascular treatments for aortic diseases.

  2. Multiscale modelling of thrombosis and thrombolysis, including false lumen thrombosis in aortic dissection and clot lysis in ischemic stroke.

  3. Multi-physics modelling of drug delivery in cancer, focusing on thermosensitive liposomes with ultrasound, nanoparticle transport, and drug uptake in tumours.

We also explore broader biofluids and transport problems, including:

  • Reverse osmosis and membrane separation processes

  • Rheological behaviour of biomass suspensions

  • Solid–liquid mixing in bioreactors for biofuel production
