Research Interests
My research interests are centered around the thermodynamics of hydrocarbon systems. Offshore production of oil and gas involves handling these fluids at high pressures and, increasingly, at higher temperatures. Under these conditions, the phase behaviour of the fluids is often unknown. Research is therefore being conducted to measure this behaviour experimentally and also to develop methods of prediction based on molecular principles.
A related issue is the safe operation of such high pressure plant and in particular the safe depressurisation of such plant either in emergency or normal operating circumstances. In conjunction with my colleague Stephen Richardson, I am conducting both experimental and theoretical research into these matters. One output of this work is a fully validated computer program called BLOWDOWN which simultaneously solves the thermodynamic, fluid mechanic and heat transfer aspects of the depressurisation process.
