Nikolaos LantzounisMy name is Nikolaos Lantzounis and I am currently studying at Imperial College in London towards a Masters in Earthquake Engineering. I originally come from Greece and I hold a 5-year Diploma in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. During my free time I enjoy hanging out with friends and organizing networking activities. I believe that communication and interactivity helps us all improve and attain personal and professional goals.

Why did you choose to do your MSc with us?

Having applied myself with enthusiasm to my academic studies I was feeling that the next step to further specialize in my engineering discipline was to complete the MSc in Earthquake Engineering. The curriculum of the program offered the perfect balance between academic knowledge and applied science to equip me for my future career. Apart from the unique cutting edge thinking of Imperial College that would strengthen my academic background, it also promised to offer an environment in which I can further develop my set of competencies. I was excited by the prospect of working in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, cooperating with people from over the world.

What are you hoping to do after your MSc?

After finishing my Masters at Imperial College I hope to initiate my career in one of the many established design companies in London. I believe that the advanced level of education that I will obtain through my MSc, coupled with the direct connection of Imperial College with the industrial practice will help me towards the above goal.

How you have found your first term?

The first term was definitely very challenging. Coming from a different university background I had to adjust quickly to the new environment. The most demanding part that I had to get used to, was the fast pace of the lectures. I had to work hard every day in order to keep track with the taught material and take the most out of every lecture. My personal tutor as well as the university staff helped me a lot towards this direction. At the same time, I was also fascinated studying with people from all over the world. Their different educational background together with our common effort against a common goal was a useful lesson that helped me incorporate different ideas and approaches.

What does a typical week look like for you?

Definitely in such an intensive master program most of my time was taken by following the lectures and preparing the coursework the best I can. However, socializing with all these new people that I had the chance to meet during this year, was something that I would definitely never miss. On the top of my demanding workload, I always had some time to hang out with people from my master and explore London. Located in the center of London, Imperial College always gave us the opportunity to visit museums, galleries and art exhibitions and explore urban adventures and festivals.
