Tower Blocks

Council tower blocks have been perennial whipping boys for the horrors of too much state interference in people’s lives. But is their foul reputation deserved?

Dr Russell’s two protagonists, Berthold Lubetkin and Erno Goldfinger, both emigré architects from Europe, brought with them first-hand knowledge and experience of the material (reinforced concrete) and the architectural style (modernism) used in most high-rise domestic building in the decades after the war.

In his seminar, Nick Russell shall discuss how they had the best of motives and while they made mistakes, they really were not responsible for the evil myths that still surround high-rise council tower blocks.
