Erich Wolfgang Korngold

Annual Malcolm Haines Memorial Concert

Malcolm Haines first came to Imperial College in 1953 and was at Imperial all his life, gaining a BSc in 1957 and PhD in 1960. Malcolm was made Professor in 1975 and Dean of the Royal College of Science in 1999. He retired in 2002, but remained deeply engaged with Imperial College and the Plasma Physics group as an Emeritus Professor and Senior Research Investigator.

In the 1950s, with other musical enthusiasts, Malcolm was involved in the setting up and organisation of lunchtime concerts at Imperial College.  This was many years before the Blyth Centre came into being and in those early days the concerts were held in a beautiful Georgian room in Exhibition Road, which then housed part of the Maths’ Department.

As well as a physicist, Malcolm was a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and Director of Music at a nearby church.  He would be delighted to know that music continues to be an important part of life at Imperial, to which he was so devoted.

The concert will be given in his memory.
