Grantham Director recognised for outstanding achievements in atmospheric science

by

Professor Sir Brian Hoskins

Professor Sir Brian Hoskins has been made an Honorary Member of the American Meteorological Society.

The Director of the Grantham Institute was one of a group of three selected by the Council of the American Meteorological Society (AMS), in recognition of his “outstanding achievements in the atmospheric and related sciences”.

Professor Hoskins received the award at a ceremony during the 94th Annual Meeting of the AMS, which was held in Atlanta, Georgia in early January.

Founded in 1919, the AMS has a membership of more than 14,000 professionals, students, and weather enthusiasts. It develops and disseminates information on the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences.

Honorary Members of the AMS are “persons of acknowledged pre-eminence in the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences, either through their own contributions to the sciences or their application or through furtherance of the advance of those sciences in some other way."

Professor Hoskins’ own research is focused on the weather and climate, in particular understanding the movement of the atmosphere from frontal to planetary scales.  He became the first Director of the Grantham Institute in January 2008, and now shares his time between Imperial and Reading University, where he is Professor of Meteorology.

His international roles have included Vice-Chair of the Joint Scientific Committee for the World Climate Research Programme, President of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences and involvement in the 2007 IPCC international climate change assessment.

He is a member of the science academies of the UK, USA, China and Europe and has received a number of awards including the top prizes of the UK and US Meteorological Societies and honorary DScs from the Universities of Bristol and East Anglia. He was knighted in 2007 for his services to the environment.
