Would you benefit from exclusive mentoring by Imperial alumni in your industry or workplace of interest?

It is said that behind every successful person there is a mentor who helped them along the way. Apparently Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg was mentored by former Apple CEO the late Steve Jobs. Mentoring is in fact nothing new. By some proponents of mentoring it is even argued that the concept originates in Homer’s Odyssey (a poem from Ancient Greece thought to date back at least 3,000 years!). But more poignantly, you know the American actor Clint Eastwood? Well, he was mentored by his grandmother…

But here at the Careers Service we are offering professional mentoring through the Alumni Mentoring Scheme! This is an opportunity to be mentored by Imperial alumni who occupy a variety of roles in a number of different professions.

The Alumni Mentoring Scheme could give you the opportunity to get guidance from experienced alumni on developing your transferable skills, gaining new opportunities, and acquiring knowledge about your chosen field.

A really positive experience to help me reflect on my soft skills and work on feedback that I receive

– Student mentee 2017

Previous participants of the scheme have highlighted the benefits gained from communicating with an alumni mentor including, among others, industry/role awareness; career advice and direction; CV and application advice; interview advice; and networking opportunities. One student found the scheme to be “a really positive experience to help me reflect on my soft skills and work on feedback that I receive, identify short term goals, and track my progress towards achieving them”. Another previous participant notes how their mentor “helped me tremendously in terms of career options by providing work experience and preparing for an interview for a second internship”. The mentoring scheme provides an opportunity to get very practical assistance in career development, solidifying career path choices by providing insight into a particular profession.

The Alumni Mentoring Scheme will open 2 February 2018. The closing date for applications is Sunday 4 March 2018. Mentoring partnerships will officially run for just under a year from April to March (the following year) so taking part is not a one-off commitment.
