AB  - We present the first results of a new survey of Ultraluminous IRAS Galaxies (ULIRGs). The survey uses a novel IR/Optical colour selection criterion designed to maximise the number of ULIRGs in the sample. We show that our technique is very successful in selecting ULIRGs, yielding a sample of 91 such objects. This is thus one of the largest samples of such objects currently available. We briefly discuss the luminosity function, the nature of the objects, and their possible relationship to quasars. Copyright ©1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
