Before Imperial
I completed my Bachelor's degree at Santa Clara University in California, where I studied English and Biology. During my senior year, I was granted a fellowship at Stanford University that introduced me to the world of neuroscience and academic research. After graduating in 2024, I joined Stanford University full-time as a Lab Manager in the Department of Neurobiology, which is where my passion for engineering and neuroscience flourished, and I felt inspired to expand my learning and knowledge in the field.
Why I applied for a Master's at Imperial
Imperial seemed a notch above other universities, not only for its global reputation, but also for the extensive and inspiring research taking place across the institution.
Ever since high school, I knew that I wanted to study abroad. Although this hope did not come to fruition in my undergraduate years, I decided to take the leap and apply to Imperial for my Master's – in fact, Imperial was the only university outside of the US that I applied to!
When I was applying for Master’s, Imperial seemed a notch above the rest, not only for its global reputation, but also for the extensive and inspiring research taking place across the institution. Also, I’d always admired London from afar and was excited by the prospect of living in such a bustling city. The opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture while studying at a world-leading university made Imperial an easy choice. I’m grateful that this opportunity was able to become a reality and that I’ve been able to experience both the academic and personal growth that comes with studying abroad.
About the MRes Neurotechnology course
The MRes Neurotechnology course stood out to me for its distinct interdisciplinary focus and the exceptional research being conducted as part of the course. This Master’s offered me a rare opportunity to combine my passion for neuroscience and engineering in one course, and enabled me to explore various facets of the field which have broadened my technical knowledge and research perspectives. I’ve been continuously inspired by the accomplishments of the department and by the talent and creativity of my peers, all of whom have enriched my entire experience at Imperial.
This Master’s offered me a rare opportunity to combine my passion for neuroscience and engineering in one course.
I thoroughly enjoy my course and the opportunities it has presented to me. The most valuable aspect of the course in my opinion is the freedom you get to learn and research what you’re interested in and passionate about in the field. Although I originally came in with a project assigned to me, the professor of my lab allowed me to explore the diverse research being conducted in the lab. After doing so, I was graciously allowed to change my intended project to something that truly engages me and that would prepare me for my long-term career goals.
Once you’ve started the course, you’re also given flexibility to choose two electives from an extensive range of options. This allowed me the autonomy to take ‘Medical Device Entrepreneurship’, a course that introduced me to the fusion between neurotechnology, innovation and business. This experience culminated in an increased enthusiasm for entrepreneurship that I hope to translate into real-world impact in future.

Imperial's clubs, societies and community
One of the most rewarding experiences at Imperial has been the vibrant community, particularly the clubs and societies. I’ve had the opportunity to become involved with inspiring organisations such as Imperial MedTech, the Neurotechnology Society and the FemTech Society. Through these societies, I’ve had the chance to attend events that have enriched my student experience and benefitted me professionally and academically by exposing me to emerging ideas, innovative research and industry perspective.
Student life in London
London has been an exciting city to live in, with endless activities and countless places to explore. I’ve particularly enjoyed exploring London’s museum scene, especially as many of them are free to enter! Having the opportunity to visit these museums on any day of the week has allowed me to regularly engage with history, art and culture outside of my studies.
As someone with a long-standing interest in literature and writing, it’s been inspiring to live in a city where many renowned writers, such as Virginia Woolf, have visited, lived or even written about in their books. Experiencing these places has sparked inspiration, deepened my appreciation for their craft and has made the experience of living in London truly unique.
I’ve also been attempting to make the most out of London’s vibrant theatre and performing arts scene. Throughout my time here, I’ve been able to watch various shows, some of them more than once, with The Phantom of the Opera remaining my personal favourite. Coming from a mid-size town in Texas where the theatre and arts scene is relatively limited, it’s been a special joy to be able to travel such a short distance to watch these incredible productions.

Living in purpose-built student accommodation – GradPad Wood Lane Studios
I live in GradPad Wood Lane Studios which is on Imperial’s White City Campus and provides studio rooms for postgraduate students. I found out about this option and other postgraduate accommodation on Imperial’s website. I’ve found living here very convenient for travelling between campuses using Imperial’s free shuttle bus. The accommodation is also within walking distance of multiple Tube stations which makes it the perfect starting point for getting around London.
The surrounding area has been ideal as it’s right next to a Westfield shopping mall, where all my shopping and grocery needs can be met. It’s also near Notting Hill which is a lively and picturesque area of London that I enjoy visiting regularly.

I intend to pursue a career situated at the intersection of neuroscience, engineering and innovation. My experiences at Imperial have provided me with a global perspective of neurotechnology which I look forward to bringing back with me when I return to the US and into my future career.
Ultimately, I have dreams of advancing the field through scientific innovation and translation into real-world applications, which I have already started doing during my time at Imperial!
