Sneha
MEng Computing (International Programme of Study)
Studying Computing at Imperial has been an extremely rewarding experience, with the course being challenging but mentally stimulating throughout.
Sneha was drawn to Imperial because of its industry connections and contributions to leading research. She knew she wanted to pursue a degree in computer science since she was 16, and aspired to do so at a world-renowned institution. Sneha shares more about her Imperial journey from studying abroad to professional development.
Starting university is an exciting and daunting experience, but being able to connect with others in the same situation really helps to acclimatise faster and find your feet. This is why visiting the campus on an open day was a great way to gain insight into being a student at Imperial, and affirmed my decision to apply here.
Studying Computing at Imperial has been an extremely rewarding experience, with the course being challenging but mentally stimulating throughout. In earlier years, the breadth of modules enables you to build foundations in many areas of the field. I really enjoyed this, as I was able to identify specialities that intrigued me, so that I could study these further in later years of the course.
There have been challenging projects and modules along the way, but there’s great support from professors, teaching assistants, and fellow peers to help me overcome these hurdles.

Studying abroad
I have made many fond memories over the last four years, but a highlight of my time at Imperial was the opportunity to participate in an exchange programme with the University of California.
I was able to diversify my academic experience by studying at an American university and immerse myself in a new culture, before returning to Imperial to complete the final year of my degree.
Through this experience, I was able to build both knowledge and confidence while being pushed out of my comfort zone. What I loved most about the UCEAP exchange program was the connections I made with students from around the world – during our time in California, we explored the gorgeous nature in Santa Cruz, took day trips to the busy city of San Francisco, and of course shared our cultures (and homesickness!) with one another. Leaving with a network of friends worldwide is one of the things I will value most about the experience.

Finding community and development opportunities
On top of great academics, Imperial has a plethora of development opportunities. During my time here, I’ve been involved in various societies, as well as committee roles which provide the opportunity to develop leadership experience and skills to elevate the academic foundation Imperial builds.
Throughout my time here, I have taken up the role of treasurer for the Erasmus Society and social secretary for the Cheerleading Society, but the most rewarding experiences was being lead choreographer for the national university dance competition, Just Bollywood. This required daily rehearsals for multiple hours for the whole term, therefore utilising time management methods to balance this as well as university work was vital. Another essential was being able to leverage leadership skills to keep the team organised and morale high, which ultimately led us to achieve first place in the competition!
I’ve also taken advantage of modules in the Business School as part of the I-Explore programme, adding extra breadth to my degree. The I-Explore programme allows students to take modules outside their degree focus for credit. I chose to take BPES (Business for Professional Engineers and Scientists) modules, but there are also languages, humanities, and a range of STEMM courses on offer. I really enjoyed getting involved in another speciality to broaden my horizons and was able to build foundational knowledge of the business field that I can build on later in my career.
Laying foundations for the future
After graduating, I plan to start working as a Software Engineer. The graduate job offer was a result of the integrated work placement during my third year at Imperial. During my 5-month placement, I delved directly into the working world and was able to gain hands-on experience as a software engineer, specifically as a full-stack developer. This first-hand insight into the industry was invaluable, leaving me even more eager to pursue a career in the field. This experience was one of the highlights of the degree programme, as it enabled me to gain work experience – and ultimately a job offer – during my studies.
