Education Day 2015
  Dear Colleagues,

Please save the date for Imperial College’s annual Education Day conference on Wednesday 11 March 2015. In recognition of innovative developments at Imperial and beyond, this year’s chosen theme is 'Students as Partners'. We hope you will join us to discuss how our students can be involved as partners in programme design, in research and in assessment and feedback.

We have an exciting afternoon planned with contributions from our keynote speaker, Professor Mick Healey, a leading expert in this area, as well as Imperial staff and their students. This year we have the addition of a morning of workshops for students and staff hosted by the Student Union. Details will follow shortly.

Kind regards,

Educational Development Unit

Communicating Knowledge Workshop
Are you a new or experienced member of staff? Would you like to review and develop your teaching practice and presentation style?

This workshop offers an opportunity to design and deliver a short (ten-minute) ‘microteaching’ session and receive constructive feedback from your peers. In this context, your peers will be people with a teaching role at Imperial who will also be presenting during the workshop. The aim of the workshop is for you to consider and evaluate your own practice and learn from the practice of others in a supportive environment. You might choose to attend this workshop to review and receive feedback on a sample of your existing teaching, a session that you are teaching in the near future, or a presentation you are giving to a non-specialist audience.

Your own session will be filmed so you have the opportunity to re-watch it at a later date.

  Key features of this workshop:

  • Planning and teaching a short session for a non-specialist audience
  • Reviewing your own and others’ teaching styles
  • Exploring how interactivity can be introduced into your teaching
  • Practicing peer observation and feedback techniques

Introduction to Problem Based Learning (Generic)   Workshop Dates
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a learner centred approach to teaching and learning. In PBL, small groups of students use a case or scenario to generate their own learning objectives and then undertake self-directed study, before returning to the group to share their findings. The PBL process has clearly defined stages with specific roles for both students and tutors. This workshop is designed to introduce staff to the PBL process and explores the nature of PBL, the rationale for its use, as well as the key issues of facilitation skills and case writing.
