AB - Displacement response spectra for damping ratios significantly higher than the nominal 5% of critical, specified in most seismic design codes, are required for the design of base-isolated structures and structures with supplementary damping devices, as well as for performance-based design approaches that use equivalent linearization. The spectra for higher damping values are generally obtained by applying scaling factors to the 5%-damped ordinates and are normally defined as functions of the damping level and sometimes also the response period. There is great variation in the scaling factors presented in current design codes and is interpreted as being due to the different characteristics of the ground motions used to derive them, since the scaling of the 5%-damped ordinates for higher damping levels display a marked dependence on strong-motion duration. Duration-dependent scaling factors for higher damping levels are derived using an extensive strong-motion dataset. Copyright © (2006) by Earthquake Engineering Research Institute.
