Minassian A, Crofts GJ, Damzen MJ, 2000, Compact, transversely pumped, narrowband Ti:sapphire ring resonators, Pacific Rim Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, CLEO - Technical Digest, Pages: 462-463

Transverse pumping of Ti:sapphire slabs has been successfully demonstrated in the development of holographic Ti:sapphire laser oscillators. This paper presents two narrowband Ti:sapphire ring resonators which use a compact transverse pumping geometry.

Udaiyan D, Crofts GJ, Damzen MJ, 2000, Generalized time-dynamics of saturable gain four-wave mixing applied to adaptive laser resonators, Pacific Rim Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, CLEO - Technical Digest

Gain gratings have been extensively studied in order to understand gain four wave mixing as a means of achieving phase conjugate reflectivity and diffraction efficiency in solid state laser. Self-adaptive laser resonator based on gain gratings have also been demonstrated to correct for thermally induced distortion in pulse-pumped laser. The self-adaptive laser resonator was modeled for a combined transmission-reflection grating including pumping and spontaneous emission.

Equations describing stimulated Brillouin backscattering including absorption in the media are solved by the method of integration along the characteristic equations of the fields. More complete analytical expressions for pump and Stokes wave intensities and for the width of the backscattered pulse are obtained. A comparison between theoretical and experimental data is made to explain the pulse compression. © 1999 Optical Society of America.

Minassian A, Crofts GJ, Damzen MJ, 1998, Self-pumped phase conjugation in Ti:sapphire slab amplifiers

A self-pumped phase conjugate (SPPC) laser was experimentally implemented in a transversely laser-pumped Ti:S slab amplifier. The loop contains two Brewster-angled slabs of Ti:S which are transversely-pumped at a repetition rate of 10Hz with Q-switched pulses from a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser system. Crystal G1 acted as the FWM crystal while the second slab G2 provided additional amplification. A non-reciprocal transmission element (NRTE) was also included to optimize the operation of the system. The loop was injected with infrared radiation from a narrowband Ti:S oscillator. The output of the Ti:SPPC system was TEM00 and predominantly single-longitudinal mode. The system was made self-starting by replacing the injection beam with a partial reflector.

Crofts GJ, Udaiyan D, Damzen MJ, 1998, Spatial mode analysis of self-adaptive laser oscillators

A theoretical analysis of the self-consistent fundamental mode of a self-adaptive holographic resonator which can dynamically correct for internal phase distortions is described. This analysis is extended to model an experimental self-adaptive laser oscillator using gain-grating formation in a flashlamp-pumped Nd:YAG laser amplifier as the nonlinear mechanism. Good agreement is found between the theory and the experimental results.

Syed KS, Crofts GJ, Damzen MJ, 1998, Transient dynamics of self-starting holographic laser oscillators

In this study, the Self-Starting Holographic Laser Oscillator (SSHLO) is theoretically modeled. The optimal parameter set of the gain-switched SSHLO is shown to be close to optimized experimental parameters for systems with equivalent gain. In addition, by changing the polarization states of the forward and backward propagating intra-cavity fields, the characteristics of different combinations of gratings are demonstrated.

Corner L, Damzen MJ, 1998, Analysis of the three valence model of photorefraction in rhodium-doped barium titanate

Zero- and first-order solutions to the three valence model equations are presented. An extensive series of characterization experiments with several highly doped samples of Rh:BaTiO3 at red and (633nm) and NIR (800nm) wavelengths have been carried out. The resulting data, along with two-beam coupling results and similar data sets taken at 800nm as well as theoretical results have been used to analyze Rh:BaTiO3 in terms of the three valence model.

Damzen MJ, 1997, High-quality solid-state laser control using self-adaptive holographic mirrors, ISSN: 1092-8081

Results based on saturable gain four wave mixing of Nd:YAG lasers are presented for the phase conjugation of a laser signal undergoing depolarization. The self-pumped phase conjugation with a gain medium in a self-intersecting loop geometry showed a reflectivity of greater than 10,000 times with self-correction of aberrations. The self-adaptive laser oscillator resulted from spontaneous formation of gain gratings and diffractive oscillation from three dimensional holograms which lead to self Q-switching and correction of aberrations.
