AB - The dependence of inertia and drag coefficients of cylindrical bodies in planar oscillatory flow on the Keulegan-Carpenter number at small values of the latter is analysed theoretically. The in-line force on the cylinder is divided into an attached flow inertia component and a vortex force associated with flow separation, and related to the rate of growth of vortices shed from the cylinder. Results for three different cross-sections (flat plate, square and circle) are compared with experimental data. (A)
