AB - We consider the scattering of a classical electron in the presence of an intense laser field and the spectrum of the arising spontaneous emission. Our results are compared with analogous quantum-mechanical calculations. Although the quantum expressions contain the Planck constant only in the Coulomb logarithm, i.e., have a very weak dependence on (h) over bar, and although in a weak field quantum and classical mechanics yield the same result (except for the slightly different Coulomb logarithm), in the presence of a strong field the difference between classical and quantum results becomes significant. In our opinion, this difference is due to the difference in behavior of a completely localized classical and completely delocalized quantum electron scattered by the ion in the presence of the strong field.
