SSE's membership in the Imperial Business Partners (IBP) programme, commencing in 2018, has strategically informed the energy company's drive toward net-zero emissions and sustainable energy transition. This partnership gives SSE crucial access to our world-leading academic expertise and research, particularly in energy futures, climate change, and data science.

Through regular co-produced reports, utilising Imperial’s extensive expertise via Imperial Consultants, SSE have continued to make the case for investment across Great Britain's net-zero grid, highlighting the way in which they and other IBP members – including Schneider Electric and Scottish Power, work collaboratively while remaining competitive in their sectors.

Research outputs from the partnership, including those focused on technologies like pumped hydro energy storage, directly informed SSE's investment decisions and strategic planning for large-scale renewable projects, enabling the company to treble its planned renewable generation capacity.

Furthermore, the IBP relationship provides SSE with a dedicated pathway to academic insight, helping them develop market-leading initiatives like their Just Transition Strategy, which focuses on the social implications of decarbonisation. This ongoing access to high-calibre expertise and the wider innovation ecosystem ensures SSE's strategy remains at the forefront of policy and technological developments.
