Meet Rami, an MSc student in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering. With an interest in studying a data-focused course that employs an interdisciplinary approach, Rami felt the MSc Renewable Energy with AI and Data Science: Geology and Geophysics course (READY MSc) was perfect for him. Rami shares more about his student experiences at Imperial, from becoming a Student Representative and a proactive member of the student community to joining a range of societies.

Why I chose a Master's at Imperial

With a background in electrical engineering, I always had a keen interest in working on energy problems faced in the modern world. There are countries still struggling with basic electrical infrastructure while the developed world is trying to decarbonise what it already has. Those are two very different challenges, and I wanted to develop the skills and expertise needed to address both. As AI and machine learning is becoming increasingly more prominent in almost every industry, I knew it was the best path for me to pursue. 

This Master's course stood out to me straight away. It presented a unique opportunity to study data science, geoscience and renewable energy, all in one place. This was exactly what I was looking for, so choosing Imperial was a straightforward decision. I loved the idea of being in a challenging environment, learning from lecturers who are active in the field, and building real industry connections. Being in a hub of research excellence where you’re surrounded by some of the brightest minds in the world means there are high academic expectations, but in my experience, the atmosphere at Imperial isn’t tense or stressful – it’s quite the opposite. People are relaxed, genuinely friendly and interesting in ways that go beyond their subject. 

The Master's course presented a unique opportunity to study data science, geoscience and renewable energy, all in one place. This was exactly what I was looking for, so choosing Imperial was a straightforward decision.

I received the Ada Lovelace scholarship to support me during my Master's. This Department of Earth Science and Engineering scholarship is awarded to students on computational Master's courses who demonstrate strong academic merit. That meant a lot practically, but it also set the bar of what I wanted to live up to.

My classmates come from all over the world, with very different stories and interests. I find myself learning so much in conversations with people I meet here and have been exposed to more interesting things than I ever expected. I knew the facilities were incredible before I joined, but I’ve found that the academics here to be even more impressive. There's a real difference between being taught by someone who just learned the topic and being taught by someone who is actively publishing and researching on it. You get to hear from experts speaking from their own experiences, research results and learning curves.

Being a student rep showed me something important that explains how Imperial got to where it is today. I saw how people cooperate and collaborate across different faculties, all from different fields and backgrounds. Feedback is not only welcomed but taken on board to create change, every voice is heard and respected and constructive feedback is taken seriously.

Beyond my studies and involvement in the department, I’ve also tried out a range of other societies. This includes the Salsa Society, Calisthenics and the Arab Society. Some stuck more than others but I wanted to make the most of being in London and our campus rather than just study in it. Imperial has a lot going on if you look for it.

What the course is really like

The best thing about the course is how cross-disciplinary it is in practice, not just on paper. In one module you're deep in geophysics, and the next you're building neural networks to classify lithofacies from wireline logs. This interdisciplinary structure forces you to think in ways that take you beyond your undergraduate level of expertise. That's the most rewarding part for me, the moments where something from one field suddenly explains something in another.

Admittedly, I’ve found that the quick pace of learning has been the hardest part because it challenges me to be proactive and adaptable when managing my approach to learning with the intention to become an expert. Early on in the course, I was sitting with gaps in my geology knowledge while also trying to build production-level ML pipelines, and I had to find a way to hold both or fall behind. What helped me was treating every project seriously, not just as an assessment but as something worth engineering properly. That mindset carried me through.

This interdisciplinary structure forces you to think in ways that take you beyond your undergraduate level of expertise. That's the most rewarding part for me, the moments where something from one field suddenly explains something in another.

Completing research projects based on real-life problems allowed me to develop my skillset in a similar way to if I had done a placement. I've worked on everything from flood risk modelling across 80,000 postcodes to deep learning on MRI scans to fusing core photography with wireline log data to classify subsurface rock types. Each one landed in a different domain and demanded a different approach. That range is not something you get from a traditional Master's. My current focus is on Energy systems research either through battery modelling or integrated grid system optimisation using machine learning and data science. It sits at the edge of control theory, energy systems, and ML. That intersection is exactly where I wanted to end up.

I could also apply to external opportunities that put the work in front of real industry problems, not just academic exercises for our independent research project. That exposure is different, the opportunity to work with project proposed by people and companies that are inside the industry seeing the exact problems we need to solve.

Laying foundations for the future

Thanks to my studies, my career goals have shifted from vague to specific. Initially I was curious about careers in energy systems and machine learning, and now I know for certain that I want to work at the intersection of energy and data. This could be in modelling battery systems, working on grid-scale storage or looking into the investment and analysis side of the energy transition. That last one surprised me. I have been an active investor since I was 18 and being at Imperial made me realise that the analytical side of energy, understanding what is actually viable and why, is something I want to stay close to.

Imperial's provides lots of careers support if you need it through the Careers Service and also through the department itself. I attended guest lectures from people actively working in the renewables and data space, which gave me a clearer picture of what the industry actually looks like versus what you imagine from the outside. I'm currently applying for roles that sit at that crossover and the projects I've done at Imperial have made this process much easier. Having real things to point to in applications and interviews is what makes you stand out.

The experiences I've had and the people I’ve met during my time at Imperial have inherently shaped my career prospects. The projects, the exposure, the people you meet here have changed how I think about where I want to go and what I want to do next.
