Aircraft Systems Engineering and Unmanned Vehicle Technologies (AE3-405)

MAVLecturers: Dr Mirko Kovac & Dr Joaquim Peiro

This course is intended to give the student an awareness and understanding of the properties and behaviour of engineering systems and the systems engineering process and provide an overview of structural and aerodynamic design of MAV and UAVs, their control and multiple applications. It examines the specific differences in the design process for UAVs as well as the challenges in the wider adoption of UAVs, including operation in controlled airspace and interoperability with piloted aircraft.

L3 Applications (AE3-418)

L3 Lecturer: Dr Mirko Kovac

The course aims at introducing third year students to group work, applied structural design and Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) prototyping. The students conceive, design, build and test small robotic mechanisms applying their knowledge in structures and aerodynamics.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and Micro Air Vehicle Technologies (AEM-AAE03)

Lecturer: Dr Mirko KovacTeaching 1

This course is intended to give the student an awareness and understanding of the properties and behaviour of engineering systems and the systems engineering process and provide an overview of structural and aerodynamic design of MAV and UAVs, their control and multiple applications. It examines the specific differences in the design process for UAVs as well as the challenges in the wider adoption of UAVs, including operation in controlled airspace and interoperability with piloted aircraft.

Mechanics (AE1-109)

MechanicsLecturer: Dr Mirko Kovac

This course aims to equip the student with formulating and solving mathematical models to describe the effects of forces on a body and to describe the resulting motion or equilibrium.  The course provides a basis for subsequent courses in structural mechanics and dynamics, and flight mechanics which are taught in later years.

Engineering Design (AE1-104)

Engineering Design Lecturer: Dr Pooya Sareh

This course aims to to stress the importance of Engineering Design and Production through enabling the student to develop a level of competence in visualisation, comprehension and communication as befits those hoping to fill an engineering position on graduation.  It also aims to develop skills for producing CAD engineering drawings to an acceptable standard and to introduce an appreciation of engineering precision and a recognition of the interlinked requirements of function, material and production.

Introductory Mathematics (AEM-ADV03)

MathLecturer: Dr Pooya Sareh

This introductory course aims to revise essential Mathematics topics that are necessary for MSc-level courses over 10 lectures. The course is split as follows:

  • 1 Function Expansions & Transforms
  • 2-3 Vector Spaces, Vector Fields & Operators
  • 4-5 Linear Algebra, Matrices, Eigenvectors
  • 6-7 Vector Calculus – Integral Theorems
  • 8-10 Partial Differential Equations
