Post-tuberculosis lung function sequelae in children

The lung-function outcomes of Gambian children with pulmonary tuberculosis

Six out of every 100 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis in The Gambia affects children below 15 years. The effects of pulmonary TB last beyond successful completion of treatment. In this study, we measured the long-term effects of pulmonary TB on the lung function and Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in Gambian children aged below 15 years (cases). We then compared their lung function and HRQoL to other children who live in the same households as the cases but had never previously had pulmonary TB. 

 Biography

I am a Clinical Research Fellow at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), where I work in the childhood tuberculosis research under the Vaccines and Immunity Theme. I am also a research degree student at the Clinical Research Department, Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, LSHTM. I had my medical training at the University of Calabar, Nigeria and completed a master’s degree in Public Health for Development at LSHTM as a Chevening scholar. I also hold a clinical fellowship of the West African College of Physicians, Faculty of Paediatrics.
