Summary

I’m an electrophysiologist; after completing my degree in Neurobiology I worked with Professor A. Colino in the University Complutense of Madrid, Spain; I become an expert in neuron physiology and patch-clamp technique. I completed my Neuroscience Ph.D. in 2012, during that time I focussed on calcium and potassium currents and their relation to the intrinsic excitability of neurons, published in Neuroscience letters (2008); Neuroscience (2010, 2012 & 2017), and Journal of Physiology (2014).

I have always had an interest in membrane nanodomains. In 2013 I joined the Functional Microscopy group at the National Heart and Lung Institute (Imperial College London) led by Professor Julia Gorelik as a Research Associate. In this position, I have been involved in several projects studying nanoscale signalling domains in cardiomyocytes. My research has comprehensively characterized both human and rat myocytes in health and disease. My work so far has resulted in 19 publications in which I have described how the precise location of voltage-gated calcium channels is essential to normal myocyte function, and how cardiomyocyte surface membrane disorganization contributes to arrhythmia. I have become an expert in state-of-the-art SICM, including “smart patch-clamp”. Using this technique, I can locate functional channels on the cell membrane and study their behaviour under different experimental conditions.

My current interest is to combine my knowledge in the neuroscience and cardiac disease fields, studying the interaction between sympathetic neurons and cardiomyocytes by characterizing in vitro co-cultures.
