AB - The Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a life threatening condition with a high mortality. Computer tomography (CT) has helped us to develop an understanding of the morphological and pathophysiological changes that occur during the course of the disease. This has allowed us to adopt more appropriate ventilation strategies with the aim of not only improving survival but also reducing ventilator associated lung damage for survivors. CT scanning may also be of use in the acute clinical setting in the diagnosis and management of complications, in assessing the progress of the disease and the use of other medical therapies.
