Before starting my Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering at Imperial, I studied a Double Bachelor’s degree in Business Management & Administration and Industrial Engineering in Basque Country. During the summers, I had the opportunity to do internships in companies from different fields.
I have always had a keen interest and curiosity in contributing positively to social and human development and directing my professional career along these lines. During the last year of my undergraduate degree, I took a module in environmental technologies.
I was fascinated by the possibility of implementing engineering solutions to environmental problems directly affecting the economy and society.
Moreover, I am passionate about nature, so the opportunity to study a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering united my main academic and personal interests in the same direction.
Studying in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has a distinguished tradition of excellence in teaching, research, and practice. As for my studies, the MSc in Environmental Engineering has been running for over 70 years and has a long history of successful developments. All these reasons led me to choose Imperial College London for my Master’s. Attending online webinars during the application process and before joining Imperial was an excellent opportunity to gain a more profound and closer insight into the process and the institution and receive guidance and support.
Following my passion
Although it may sound stereotypical, the day I discovered that I had been admitted to Imperial College London was, without a doubt, one of the happiest and most comforting days of my life.
Not only because I was admitted to one of the best universities in the world but also because I was being given the opportunity to expand and develop my knowledge and experience in the area that I am truly passionate about; the environment and sustainability.
Getting settled in as a Master’s student
During the first term, I attended numerous social and extra-curricular events organised by the University. These types of events are an opportunity for people like me, who landed in London without knowing anyone, to meet and develop their social circle.
My experience of the course
So far, the most rewarding part of the course has been applying the knowledge, skills and experiences I have acquired in the classroom in practice. The shift from theoretical to practical makes this course so applicable and aimed at solving society's main environmental challenges.
The most challenging part of the course so far has probably been staying focused on attending every class, doing all assigned work, and getting enough rest and exercise. Having a healthy life balance can be challenging sometimes, but Imperial provides extensive support to ensure every student receives the best possible care and overall experience at the University.
Access to leading research facilities
The benefits of Imperial’s strong industry and research partnerships can be perceived everywhere; from outstanding lectures by top industry professionals, to first class facilities.
Especially the laboratories and all the technical equipment that us students have at our disposal as part of the transversal teaching model performed by Imperial. Our lectures cover a wide range of fields and academic environments, which allow students to better understand the relevance and depth knowledge we are acquiring. It’s an exciting way of getting hands-on with real-life problems and challenges. And of course, the countless talks, workshops and events in which representatives from different companies and sectors offer students the opportunity to get to know and discover areas other than the purely academic.
Moving to London as an international Master’s student
If you are moving to London for the course, you must be clear on what is important to you and what you value: comfort, proximity to the University, sharing accommodation or living alone. If you are moving to London for the first time, you should know that this city is a real estate hotbed, and when you find a good deal, you should go for it. The university also offers support to international students but understands that, as students with a certain level of maturity, we are also responsible for finding a place on our own.
My future career
Imperial has been a launch pad that has opened up a world of opportunities for me. The connections and contacts with leading companies in the market make the academic experience have an excellent professional projection. This has allowed me to aspire higher and want to work for companies that, until recently, would have been unattainable for me. I do not rule out returning to my native Bilbao, which has offered me so many opportunities, but for the moment, I would like to go to those places where my contribution to society and the environment is most needed.
One thing that has impressed me about my experience at Imperial has been the sheer number of opportunities the University provides for those who wish to pursue a career in research.
From a business perspective, my advice is to be prepared to receive countless rejections until you get the offer that really makes you feel you should look no further. That is when you should stop and think about what you have achieved and congratulate yourself for it.
Application advice
First, be clear about your area of interest and what you want to achieve in life. It is ok not to have a clear idea as long as you are aware of your life-long motivation. Second, research the course you are applying to and consider whether it fits with you and whether you fit in. Third, aim high, and you will go far. If you have the right skills and attitude, Imperial is the place for excellence. Finally, don't give up; fight for your dreams, seek support from family and friends and ask for help if needed.
My experience at Imperial would not have been possible without the unconditional support and contribution of my family, whose hard work and effort have made it possible for me to study at one of the best universities in the world, and to this end, I would like to give them a special mention.
