Harness your passion for science, technology, engineering and medicine with our Outreach STEM Leader scheme for postgraduate students and Imperial staff.

As an Outreach STEM Leader, you will be responsible for supporting a team of ambassadors and leading activities for young people.

We run activities for students aged 6–18 to capture their interest in studying science, medicine and engineering at university from an early age.

We have two fantastic spaces dedicated to working with school students – the Wohl Reach Out Lab at South Kensington and the Dangoor Reach Out Makerspace in White City.

The scheme operates on a casual basis so you can choose which activities you are best suited to and you'll be paid for those that you do. This gives you flexibility to fit the work around your availability, whether just a couple of hours or a week-long summer school.

Who we're looking for

Outreach STEM Leaders are primarily PhD candidates and Imperial staff.

We’re looking for people who enjoy working with young people, who can use initiative and who are enthusiastic about sharing their passion for their subject.

To be successful in this role, you should have strong knowledge in your subject area and be able to clearly communicate your subject to young people in an engaging and accessible way.

There may also be opportunities to develop new content based on current curricula or your research.

Benefits

This is an opportunity to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and doctors, while meeting staff and students from across the College.

Rates of pay

Our rate of pay is dependent on the kind of activity you take part in and the level of responsibility involved.

It ranges from £19.57/hour (including holiday pay) to £28.56/hour (including holiday pay).

We will let you know in advance the rate of pay for each activity.

How to apply

Recruitment for Outreach STEM Leaders typically takes place in the autumn term only. However in 2023/24, we will be recruiting a small number of Leaders in the Spring Term.
