Global Based Thermal Image Registration for Diagnosis of Morphoea

, International Conference for Innovation in Biomedical Engineering and Life Sciences (ICIBEL), Publisher: SPRINGER, Pages: 76-81, ISSN: 1680-0737

Analyzing and interpreting of thermograms have been increasingly employed in the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases thanks to its non-invasive, non-harmful nature and low cost. This paper presents a thermal image analysis system based on image registration for morphoea disease diagnosis. A novel system is proposed to improve the diagnosis and monitoring of morphoea based on integration with the published lines of Blaschko. In this application, image registration based on global and local registration methods are found inevitable. A modified normalized gradient cross-correlation (NGC) method to reduce large geometrical differences between two multimodal images of different subjects that are represented by smooth gray edge maps is proposed for the global registration approach. It is shown in this paper that the NGC method outperforms phase correlation (PC) method by a lower rate of misregistration. This demonstrates that by using the gradients of the gray edge maps, the performance of the PC based image registration method can be greatly improved.

Comparative Study of 2D Grid Antenna Array Geometries for Massive Array Systems

, IEEE GLOBECOM 2015, Publisher: IEEE

In upcoming trends of wireless communications, such as massive MIMO, the number of antennas at the transmitter(TX) and receiver (RX) are expected to increase dramatically, aiming to provide a substantial improvement in system performance and spectral efficiency. However, an increase in the number of antennas also results in an increase in hardware, computational complexity and energy dissipation of the MIMO system. Therefore, the antenna array geometry plays a crucial role in the overall system performance. This paper is concerned with planar antenna array geometries with emphasis given to the family of 2D "grid" arrays and presents an insight into the relation between the array geometry and various performance metrics, such as detection, resolution and data-rate maximization, that may be used in different applications.

Hybrid precoding for physical layer multicasting

, IEEE Communications Letters, Vol: 20, Pages: 228-231, ISSN: 1558-2558

This work investigates the problem of downlink transmit precoding for physical layer multicasting with a limited number of radio-frequency (RF) chains. To tackle the RF hardware constraint, we consider a hybrid precoder that is partitioned into a high-dimensional RF precoder and a low-dimensional baseband precoder. Considering a total transmit power constraint over the RF chains, the goal is to maximize the minimum (max-min) received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) among all users. We propose a low complexity algorithm to compute the RF precoder that achieves near-optimal max-min performance. Moreover, we derive a simple condition under which the hybrid precoding driven by a limited number of RF chains incurs no loss of optimality with respect to the fully digital precoding case. Finally, numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and theoretical findings

Nested array with time-delayers for target range and angle estimation

    , CoSeRa 2015, Publisher: IEEE, Pages: 249-252

Since a nested phased array cannot directly estimate the range of targets due to range ambiguity, this paper proposes a nested array with diverse time-delayers for target range and angle estimation. The essence is to construct a new array structure by systematically nesting two uniform linear arrays through diverse time-delays which yields a range-dependent receiving array beampattern. Using second-order statistics of the received data, it is capable of providing a dramatic increase of the system degrees-of-freedom which means more sources can be resolved. More importantly, target range and angle can be estimated by exploiting the range-dependent array beampattern. The performance improvements are evaluated by examining the Cramér-Rao lower bounds.

A Differentiable Approximation to Speech Intelligibility Index with Applications to Listening Enhancement

, AES Intl Conf on Audio Forensics

The Speech Intelligibility Index is a standardised objective measure for estimating the intelligibility of speech in noise. It is, however difficult to use it in the iterative optimisation of speech enhancement algorithms because it is a discontinuous function of its input parameters. In this paper, we derive an approximation for the Speech Intelligibility Index that is both continuous and differentiable, which allows for more efficient optimisation procedures. The use of the approximation is demonstrated in an application to near-end speech enhancement.
